How to Measure Furniture Before Buying Online

Checking the product dimensions is only part of measuring for new furniture. You also need to make sure the item can reach the room safely through doors, hallways, stairs and lifts.

1. Measure the space where the furniture will go

Record the available width, depth and height. Leave enough space for doors, drawers and cupboard doors to open fully.

2. Measure access routes

Check the narrowest doorway, hallway, stair turn and lift opening between the entrance and the final room. Large wardrobes, beds, sofas and cabinets can be difficult to move through tight spaces.

3. Check assembled and packaged dimensions

If the product is flat packed, package dimensions can be more important for delivery access than the final assembled size. Review the individual product page for the dimensions provided.

4. Allow for skirting boards and radiators

Furniture may not sit completely flush against a wall if there are skirting boards, sockets, pipes or radiators behind it.

5. Recheck before ordering

Measure twice, especially for beds, wardrobes, desks and dining sets. Browse our beds and frames, cabinets and cupboards or chests of drawers once you know the space available.
